History of Grama Panchayat

Kareepra is an inland village located 20 km east of Kollam city and 12 km west of Kottarakkara. During the reign of Marthanda Varma, palmyra climbers (toddy tappers) from Kanyakumari were settled here to harvest palmyra leaves. To this day, the heart of this village is known as 'Panamthoppu' (Palmyra Grove).According to legend, the name 'Kareepra' originated from the combination of the words 'Kari' (elephant) and 'Para' (a traditional measuring vessel used in rituals), as elephants from Brahmin mutts were used to perform the Para-yideel ceremony in local temples.Notably, this grama panchayat was honored with the award for the best village in Kerala in the years 1969 and 1970.
